Interior Renovations of an Existing Family Home, Alphington

Giving a Californian bungalow new life and better functionality
– dramatic improvement to the interior, through strategic and subtle renovation changes.

New kitchen and living room joinery: alterations to existing family residence, Alphington.

This project was to improve the aliveability and layout of a previously renovated californian bungalow. Our client wanted to improve the existing dark, sombre and dated rooms, to create happier, lighter and brighter spaces with a more contemporary edge.

Design Solution

By simply ‘opening up’ the living and dining areas to the existing garden, connected and brightened these internal spaces.

The darker existing bathrooms and laundry (previously renovated by others) were totally re-organised with a view to improve light, usability, and cross-ventilation. The family bathroom and laundry were re-located and re-designed throughout, whilst a new en-suite and walk-in-robe were added – all within the existing external walls.

In summary, the alterations to this family home include:

  • Renovation of windows and doors to the existing living, dining and kitchen areas.
  • New kitchen fit-out, plus the addition of book shelf and joinery to the living room.
  • New en-suite bathroom and walk-in-robe.
  • Revise laundry and family bathroom, and powder room.
  • Minor revisions to existing bedrooms to improve usability, improve quality of light and heat control.
  • Improve thermal performance of the home to reduce reliance on air-conditioning and heating.

Sustainable Design Principles

  • Retain, and renovate, the existing building fabric as much as possible.
  • Open up the living areas to the north, whilst installing external blinds to these, and the existing windows facing east, to control solar access to interior areas.
  • Remove upper floor skylight windows, and improve existing windows to bedrooms (including sun control).
  • Increase insulation levels to roofs, ceilings and walls being renovated.
