Cathi Colla Architects’ Thornbury Residence, quoted as: a renovation, adapting an existing home, “that worships the northern exposure“. Quote from ‘Slice’ Architect Victoria, Spring Issue, Australian Institute of Architects, Victorian Chapter publication.

Full excerpt:

“Modest alterations and budget focussed additions to an existing residence adapts a typically tired and sick old suburban home, with little response to site, into one that worships northern exposure. The main living areas were re-oriented to the north by revising door and window locations; the interior of those rooms were altered to respond, along with modification of interior circulation. A new deck was added to the north of the main living areas, and to provide an expansive outdoor entertaining zone easily accessible from these rooms. A new addition, the multi-purpose room, functionally and visually compliments the deck. Much of the cost was consumed by significant rectification works, overhauling the thermal performance of the existing home, the creation of the new room, deck and sun-shading, as well as miscellaneous renovations.”
